Does Bibi Have a Safety Net Under His Tightrope?

Israel's Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is walking a tightropeThe country is against further Jewish building freezes in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem, but U.S. President Obama and others are dictating that all Jewish building must cease forever.

Here's Bibi's statement at the start of the Cabinet meeting today (Monday), 4.10.10:

"The Government is prepared for the great missions of the coming session – passing a budget and continuing to ensure security and advance peace. Our Government is committed to all of these challenges, to lead Israel to prosperity, security and peace.

In the two primary fields, security and the economy, we have had important achievements. We have led the Israeli economy to emerge from the global recession quicker than most – nearly all – western countries. We implemented a policy of aggressive response to missiles fired at us and to other attacks against our territory. The list is long; I will not detail it here.

One month ago, the Palestinians entered into direct talks with us, following a series of gestures that the Government carried out in order to advance the peace process. We have fully lived up to our commitment, a difficult commitment that we took upon ourselves. Now there is interest in continuing the peace negotiations. This is a vital interest for the State of Israel. We are in the midst of sensitive diplomatic contacts with the US administration in order to find a solution that will allow the continuation of the talks. Now is not the time for issuing statements. We have no interest in causing an uproar. Neither do I have the possibility of denying the baseless media report. But I do have an interest in responding calmly and responsibly in order to advance the diplomatic process. We will quietly consider the situation and the complex reality away from the spotlights. I propose that everyone be patient, act responsibly, calmly and – above all – quietly. This is exactly what we must do."

In the end, if he keeps this up Netanyahu will please no one.  He'll just be proven another morally bankrupt politician and not the leader we need.

We, Israel, the Jewish People need a Jewish leader with strong ideals who makes it very clear that his (or her) priorities are simple, what's best for the Jewish People and the State of Israel.  We need someone who has the confidence to ignore all foreign pressure.  That would be a true leader, not the weak, dangerously pathetic politicians we've been electing all these years.

Doven for strong Jewish leadership to arise, whether it's Bibi or someone else, I want the leadership and good judgement.

A couple of weeks ago in the newspaper Besheva in Hebrew, Moshe Feiglin made a significant statement. He said that making progress toward Jewish leadership in the current political system is being impeded by the opposition (people like him and us) not having a real program. We can't say "vote for us" unless and until we say what we are for. The last person to have a clear Jewish program and run for office (I say this, Moshe didn't) was Rav Kahane hy"d, and he was banned from politics and then murdered, himself and later his son and daughter-in-law. If Moshe Feiglin really believes in the program of Rav Kahane but is not saying so in order to avoid being banned and murdered (not the dumbest idea in the world), then that might be the problem. We may just have to wait until the leadership and the people both get to a point of unity on a true Jewish program. The program is the Torah. The issues are of implementation in the situation of 21st century Israel.

I think you are being much too hard on Bibi. In the meantime his high wire act has been nothing less than masterful. He has given nothing away while putting the Palestinians on the spot and playing Obama like a violin. We have to keep things in proportion .Even if chas v'chalilah the present situation is "frozen", with almost half a million Jews in Yehudah Shomron inc. E. Jerusalem we are in a strong position. Bibi has shown shrewd strategy by making conditions on the "two state solution" such that it will never be implemented, but we can blame it on the Palestinians. This is a realistic policy that deserves our support.
