The Latest in American Politics

POWER COUPLES

Eleanor and George McGovern were the first.

In many cases the wife was the better student, and then she married the ambitious fellow law student and supported his political ambitions.

I remember reading about the McGovern's during his campaign. The article was written by a woman who was in awe of Eleanor, not just for her intelligence, and not just because Eleanor had baked the cakes and cleaned up, but because to the amazement of the writer, had sewn her ultra-suede dress, (the illustration in that link looks amazingly like the one Eleanor is wearing here,) which was even more fashionable than the expensive one the writer had bought. Funny what things stick in one's mind.

George was schlonged, badly defeated, by Nixon. And Nixon's wife, Pat, was the antithesis of Eleanor. Any time a reporter/photographer tries to use me as a "prop" for my husband, by asking me to sit silently and meekly next to him for a picture, I reply:

"I'm no Pat Nixon!"

This year's top three Democratic candidates for U.S. President and their spice (why isn't it like mouse/mice?) spouses are very much like the McGovern's; though I doubt if Michelle, Elizabeth and Bill sew their own clothes.

Yes, Michelle Obama is a lawyer.
In 1989, Michelle was working at a downtown law firm and assigned the role of advisor to a summer associate from Harvard, Barack Obama. He reportedly didn't have much interest in corporate law, but did have a lot of interest in Michelle. (complete article)

Most of the press about John and Elizabeth Edwards has been about her health problems, but she was a top law student when they met.

And what can I say about Hillary and Bill? You know their story.

Things have changed. Nothing like Ike and Mamie or even Jack and Jackie. What's next?
