We shouldn't forget that whatever a politician does or says if for one thing and one thing only--his or her campaign. Their aim is to get votes and support, so they can get elected and then re-elected.
Amir Peretz, Israel's most inept and unsuccessful Defense Minister, thinks that voters will think him "a man" if he (G-d forbid) sends the soldiers to destroy the small Jewish Communities in Judea and Samaria. So whenever he feels the need to strut his stuff, he announces that he will "evacuate illegal (sic) outposts."
Olmert isn't convinced that "evacuating," one of the euphemisms for "destroying," the small "hilltop" communities will get him more votes, especially after the police violence in Amona last year. Therefore he's trying "negotiations." His big problem is that the people he is negotiating with don't have much influence with many of the "hilltop" leaders.
Both Olmert and Peretz are desperate to distract the Israeli public from the serious security dangers the country isn't facing up to properly.
Instead of trying to force loyal Jews off the the strategic and historic hilltops of Judea and Samaria, the government should be out to destroy the network of tunnels the terrorists have been digging in the south:
Terrorists Tunneling Towards Israeli Civilians
And Olmert and his lawyers are trying to keep the lid on increasing corruption charges.

It's bad enough to hear people ask/demand of candidates, "What are you going to do for me?" But when the candidates support actions that will actively harm citizens, and choose them because they most likely will not support that candidate, that's as low as you can go.
We see it here far too often. I guess that means that Israel is now a "modern" political state. You're all grown up!
So, can it get better?
